A Selling Resumé

Formats are many and choosing one is more than a matter of personal taste. Job seekers must bear in mind that usually their Résumé will precede any notions / referrals about them.

Your Résumé should be efficient and effective. That is, easy to read, well structured, short (1-2 page long) and state clearly your major strengths and capacities. Instructions for a sample Résumé follow:

  • At the top, it should show your name and how to contact you, to include your phone numbers and email. Instead of a physical address you may wish to mention your City and State of residence. Your Resumé can become a public document.
  • Follow with a 3-5 line Executive Summary mentioning the functional areas and industry sectors in which you have worked, and your most important skills.
  • Next, you may wish to complement the above with your Key Competencies or technical abilities in a bulleted format, with no explanations.
  • Then comes your Professional Experience. In this section you must show in chronological order the Companies you have worked for and the positions held (display dates as month and year). Do not list your functions / responsibilities but tell rather about your major contributions in those positions. These should reinforce your competencies and skills.
  • Finally, you should close with your Education and Special Training.

Avoid stating the sort of position you seek or wish to apply for, as it may limit your scope of possibilities. Do not include references. Do not use acronyms or jargon
